Apart from the normal kit, such as tripods, lighting of all kinds, power generator and relevant accessories, the photo shoot in the 5001 bunker also required a whole series of special items, some of them being made for the purpose.
In detail:
Wall mounting board
Corner bracket Panorama head (converted) Camera with appropriate lens Camera control Portable power supply Converted torches
Most of the photos were taken using the emergency lighting which had been set up. However, this was based on 25 W bulbs at irregular intervals, so this resulted in uneven lighting in the rooms and with a strong shift to the red spectrum. The resulting extreme degree of lighting cannot be captured by normal cameras. The individual directions of shooting were, therefore, covered by three individual shots, differing from each other by two stops. These are then later combined into a single shot using the HDR system, which reproduces the overall brightness range.
In those areas where there was no or insufficient lighting available, illumination was provided by artificial lighting (up to 24 x 150 W bulbs) or by using the portable power supply. For outdoor shots of the bunker, when large lights were used, it was necessary to take seven individual shots instead of the normal three in order to achieve the requisite definition. The lens settings of the resulting photos range over twenty stops!
In shafts, unlit rooms and tunnels lighting had to be achieved by hand. The portable power supply is modular in design. It consists of batteries, transmitters and receivers with remote control, DC/AC converters (generating 220 V from the batteries), the bunker’s emergency lighting system (with sockets) and converted torches (with 12 V halogen bulbs fitted instead of the normal bulbs – 1 x 50 W diffused and 1 x 35 W spot effect). The individual parts of the modular system can be combined as required, providing four different lighting arrangements to cope with every situation.
