Visiting the Honecker Bunker 5001

For english tours starting from the UK please call +44 (0)7949 912470 !

As part of restoring and improving the bunker seal , an agreement was reached between the BBN and the Berlin forestry organisation to permit temporary visits to the bunker. The income from the guided tours must be used to finance the final sealing of the bunker by the BBN. Since the bunker cannot simply be opened for general public access, those interested in visiting the bunker must book via this website for one of the guided tours.

What will I see on the tours?
This mini underground township still has almost all of its original equipment, even if it’s no longer functioning. The complex technical equipment can therefore be seen in its entirety, thus providing a comprehensive picture, not only of life within the bunker, but also of aspects of the cold war, specifically of this bunker which cost many millions of marks in its time. The “floating” platforms are technically unique and were designed to neutralise any shockwaves from a nuclear explosion. The rooms on the platforms, some two storeys high, would have served as the offices for the East German political leaders. The platforms are up to 25 x 25 x 8 m in size and weigh over 500 tonnes. These platforms are the main reason why the bunker has been declared an historic building. The largest of the platforms will be viewed in detail on the tours.

Even we see that the sealing of the bunker is a necessary evil. Obviously, it would be much better if the bunker could be kept open as a museum. However, such an undertaking is not financially feasible. According to various experts, the long-term costs for security and getting the bunker “operational” would run to seven figures! The bunker would not be self-supporting even as a tourist attraction, as experience from other, smaller, bunkers in a better state of repair has shown. The operators of such bunkers have constant problems, trying to cover their costs and to keep their bunker up to scratch.
For these reasons, sealing the Honecker bunker provides the best opportunity for preserving the bunker long-term, with the BBN documentation providing an ideal alternative to visit the site. Even if the real feel of the bunker is missing, this is at least compensated for by the virtual bunker being open at all times, lit throughout and with access to everything and everywhere. You’ll therefore be able to get to places where, in real life, you almost certainly wouldn’t want to walk or crawl to!
